2026-06-13

To further improve the high-level talent cultivation system, optimize the discipline layout, align with national strategic needs, and accelerate the development into a high-level university of science and engineering, the university held the Discipline Development Forum and the Inauguration Ceremony for the School of Mathematical Sciences, the School of Physical Science and Technology, and the Institute of Post-Quantum Science and Technology in the Library Auditorium on June 13. Academicians Ye Chaohui and Zhang Ping from the Chinese Academy of Sciences, along with university leaders Lian Jijian, Chen Shengyong, Song Tao, Xu Rui, Ye Ning, and Su Ronghua, attended the ceremony. The event was presided over by Ye Ning, a member of the Standing Committee of the Party Committee and Vice President of the university.

During the meeting, Xu Rui, Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee, read aloud the decision on the establishment of the School of Mathematical Sciences and the School of Physical Science and Technology.

Amidst enthusiastic applause, Academicians Ye Chaohui and Zhang Ping, together with Lian Jijian, Secretary of the Party Committee, and Chen Shengyong, Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee and President of the university, jointly unveiled the plaques for the School of Mathematical Sciences and the School of Physical Science and Technology. Subsequently, Academician Zhang Ping and Secretary Lian Jijian unveiled the plaque for the Institute of Post-Quantum Science and Technology and presented an appointment letter to Professor Zong Chuanming as the founding director of the institute.

In his address, Chen Shengyong, Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee and President of the university, emphasized that the university currently has five disciplines ranked in the top 1% globally by ESI, ranks in the top 200 globally in the Nature Index, and is among the top 100 universities in mainland China. During the 14th Five-Year Plan period, the university has doubled its indicators in areas such as doctoral programs, national-level talents, and research funding. He pointed out that a new round of technological revolution and industrial transformation is surging, with quantum science and technology becoming a frontier in global technological competition. Post-quantum technology is crucial for safeguarding national cyber and information security. As the foundation of natural sciences, mathematics and physics play an irreplaceable role in catalyzing cutting-edge technological innovations and cultivating high-level scientific and technological talents. Taking the establishment of the new schools and institute as a new starting point, the university will actively shoulder the mission of building a leading education and technology powerhouse, continuously optimize the discipline ecosystem, promote interdisciplinary integration, and focus on conducting original and leading-edge research, contributing "TUT" wisdom and strength to the high-quality development of fundamental disciplines and achieving scientific and technological self-reliance in the post-quantum field.

In their messages, Academicians Ye Chaohui and Zhang Ping spoke highly of the development of fundamental disciplines at Tianjin University of Technology. They stated that the country currently places the strengthening of fundamental disciplines at the core of its strategy, which has pointed out the direction and provided fundamental guidelines for the leapfrog development of mathematics, physics, and other fundamental disciplines at the university. They expressed expectations for the university to explore new paths in multidisciplinary integration and strive for breakthroughs in original innovation and key core technological research.

Lian Jijian, Secretary of the Party Committee, extended warm congratulations on behalf of the Party Committee for the establishment of the new units. He pointed out that the disciplines of mathematics and physics have always resonated with the development of the university. This institutional adjustment is not only an inevitable requirement to adapt to the development of the times and serve national needs but also a key measure for the university to deepen comprehensive reform and strive to become a "Double First-Class" institution. He proposed three hopes for the newly established units: First, strengthen Party building to consolidate the foundation for development. Political construction must be placed at the forefront, using high-quality Party building to lead and guarantee high-quality development and create a clean and upright environment for entrepreneurship. Second, focus on core responsibilities to enhance quality and empowerment. We must firmly grasp strategic opportunities, proactively focus on academic frontiers, align with national and local development needs, delve into fundamental research and interdisciplinary cooperation, and strive for original and breakthrough achievements. Third, respect the pioneering spirit of teachers and students to gather a concerted force for progress. The leadership of the schools must adhere to a student- and teacher-centered approach. All teachers must keep in mind the original mission of educating people for the Party and the country, and write a new chapter in discipline development with practical and solid actions. He expressed hope to build the Schools of Mathematics and Physics into high-level institutions with distinct characteristics, outstanding advantages, and significant influence, promoting the high-quality development of fundamental disciplines.

Also attending the ceremony were over 40 renowned experts and scholars in the fields of mathematics and physics from more than 20 "Double First-Class" universities nationwide, as well as heads of relevant functional departments of the university and representatives of teachers and students.

After the ceremony, the university held the Mathematics Discipline Development Forum, the Physics Discipline Development Forum, and academic report sessions. Secretary Lian Jijian and President Chen Shengyong, together with the attending experts and scholars, engaged in in-depth discussions on topics such as frontier trends in fundamental disciplines, the cultivation of top-notch innovative talents, and interdisciplinary integration, offering suggestions for the high-quality development of the university's mathematics and physics disciplines.
