Relying on profound disciplinary heritage and an excellent faculty, the School of Physics Science and Technology has cultivated the field of physics with dedication, becoming a vital base for training professional talents in physics.

The discipline has a rich history of development and remarkable achievements. The Physics Discipline Group was approved as a Characteristic Discipline Group of Tianjin. The Master's program in Condensed Matter Physics was approved in 1998 as the first master's program in the discipline; its establishment dates back to 1987 when the team led by Academician Xu Xulu, the founder of luminescence in China, arrived at the university. In 2006, the Master's program in Optics was approved, followed by the first-level Master's program in Physics in 2011. In 2017, it was designated as a Key Discipline of Tianjin.

Leveraging high-quality university-wide research resources, the School successfully applied for and established the Tianjin Key Laboratory of Quantum Optics and Intelligent Photonics in 2022. This laboratory focuses on the design, preparation, characterization, and device development/industrial application of functional crystal materials. Research directions include nonlinear optical crystals, electro-optic crystals, scintillation crystals, thermoelectric, ferroelectric, and magneto-optic novel functional crystal materials, as well as large-size crystal growth and device R&D. After years of development, and closely aligning with Tianjin's industrial demands, the school has formed four research directions: "Laser Spectroscopy and Atomic Spectroscopy," "New Optical Imaging Mechanisms and Technologies," "Semiconductor Devices and Physics," and "Rare Earth Luminescence and Display."
