The School possesses strong research capabilities and fruitful results. In the past three years, the faculty has undertaken multiple vertical projects, including those from the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) and the Tianjin Natural Science Foundation, as well as various horizontal research projects. Academic output is abundant, with a large number of high-level academic papers published, and numerous invention patents applied for.

Led by national-level talents, the discipline strengthens organized research, actively organizes applications for key national major scientific research projects, and strives to produce leading original scientific results. Addressing national and Tianjin strategic needs, the School conducts frontier basic scientific research focusing on directions such as new nonlinear optical crystals, semiconductor devices and physics, and quantum optics and intelligent photonics. Cumulatively, the faculty has hosted 3 NSFC Distinguished Young Scholars Fund and Excellent Young Scholars Fund projects, 3 key and major projects, and 45 other NSFC projects. The School has been authorized 26 national invention patents and won 8 provincial and ministerial-level science and technology awards, including the First Prize for Natural Science of Tianjin. More than 450 SCI papers have been published with the School as the first or corresponding author unit. Notably, research results regarding the design of infrared nonlinear optical devices based on ion-group-driven covalent directional alignment and rigid-soft strategies—achieving excellent nonlinear optical performance and wide optical bandgaps—were published in the journal Science Advances.
